A Busy First Weekend in June.

The last few weeks have been very busy at band with the run up to the Ripon Contest and also putting together our summer concert programme.

Image may contain: one or more people and indoorThis time last year, Jack had only run four rehearsals with us before taking us to Ripon. Having had a whole year to get to know us, and us him and much more time, planning and rehearsals, we all felt so much more confident and our final performance on the day was also a marked improvement on last year. Our programme also contained one of Jack’s own arrangements which was received very well by both the audience and the adjudicators.

The winning bands of Leyburn and Uppermill were in a class of their own on the day and really stood out as winners; however many people commented that the standard of playing by all bands was much higher than in pervious years. We were very pleased to have been placed 7th overall and even moreĀ  pleased for Bob, our Solo Euphonium player who was awarded the best Euphonium Player Trophy at the contest. His solo also received high praise from the adjudicators and the audience alike. Bob has been a player with the band for many years and in more recent years his sons have joined the band and John has even arranged music for the band too. Some players in the band even remember them being born. They now play with the band, one on percussion and one on cornet and it is clear to see both have inherited their father’s musical genes.

Today we have been out in Skipton again playing for visitors and locals and we played alongside Skipton’s Car Show. Holy Trinity Church – who had been kind enough to let us rehearse there when we couldn’t use our usual room had organised a mini Fete and we provided the musical backdrop round off the afternoon. With a mixture of hymns and traditional pieces the band entertained the audience and invited them to sing along. It may have been a busy weekend but it has been very enjoyable too and the band are looking forward our next round of concerts and hope the weather stays as nice as it was today for the rest of the summer season.
